Hyperpigmentation is a very common skin condition in which patches of skin become discolored (usually darker) due to an excess of melanin production - this can be caused by sun damage, acne scarring or even hormone fluctuations.
Fortunately, there are a vast number of treatment options available to combat hyperpigmentation, and in many cases, it is not a permanent change.
It is always a good idea to consult with a medical professional to rule out a more severe cause of hyperpigmentation such as hormone imbalances that should be regulated by medicine.
For many, however, the cause is a result of damage caused to the skin by aggressive acne or the sun, and can be treated and reduced with specialized skin products.
Facial Lightening Creams
Lightening creams are a fantastic way to treat hyperpigmentation at home. Considered a fantastic product to include in your skin regimen if you are dealing with mild to moderate flat discoloration, you can use these creams daily, or even mixed in with your favorite leave-on facial mask.
A 2018 ASCP Skin Deep Readers’ Choice Awards “Winner of Best Hyperpigmentation Collection” is the Eminence Organics Bright Skin Licorice Root Booster-Serum. This product is considered a “Lightening Cream” which combats the darker discoloration caused by hyperpigmentation.
This product contains one of the most important ingredients you should look out for in a lightening cream: Hydroquinone. This is great for smooth hyperpigmentation occurrences, such as age spots, and not considered to be the most effective method to treat raised hyperpigmentation or acne scarring.
Another one of our client-favorite hyperpigmentation products has to be PFB Vanish™ + Chromabright™ - a powerful combo of skin lightening and bump fighter created specifically to combat hyperpigmentation. Dark spots can occur on other areas of the body other than the face, such as under the arms, on inner thighs, etc, and this product is suitable to use on any of those places.
Facial Acid Products
While the term “acid” is not the most comforting when referring to something you put on your face, there are plenty of beneficial acids that can help tremendously with a variety of skin issues - including hyperpigmentation.
You may recognize some as glycolic acid, lactic acid or salicylic acid as some of the most popular ones.
The majority of facial acids, or products that contain acidic ingredients work to exfoliate your skin to remove dead skin cells, dirt, and other impurities that live on your face.
This helps to reveal new skin underneath which improves the overall look of your skin tone as well as the smoothness of your skin. This can be beneficial for various manifestations of hyperpigmentation, such as raised areas caused by acne scarring as well as flat discoloration.
Our favorite product to utilize as a basic cleanser that contains some of these healthy facial acids is the Rhonda Allison Citrus Gel Cleanser which contains citric acid (the natural acid found is most citrus fruits).
A similar winner in the facial acid cleanser category is the Eminence Organics Mangosteen Daily Resurfacing Cleanser. The “resurfacing” part of this product is extremely important, as that is a necessary step to combating hyperpigmentation or an uneven skin tone. The lactic acid complex that is one of the main ingredients of this product earned it the well-deserved title of “Winner of Best Exfoliating Cleanser” in the Beauty Shortlist Awards in 2019.
